10.5 Inch MSTN Upper

This all started out as a question about gas port size and ended with me buying a brand new upper.

This is my new 10.5 inch upper from Wes Grant at MSTN.

LMT 10.5"
Larue 7.0 forend
PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle
LMT Full Auto Bolt Carrier Group
Crane O-ring on extractor spring
Phantom Flash Suppressor from YHM.

I added the Eo-Tech and Surefire myself.

It runs very well and has much less flash and kick than I would have imagined from a shorty.

Some of the home-made or other brand shorty M4's I have seen in over the years were not well done. They were excessively loud, harsh to shoot and unreliable.

This MSTN gun has really changed my opinion on short M4's.

In Iraq we resorted to carrying beat-up folder AK's, old sub-guns, and multiple pistols in an effort to remain low-viz. The 14.5 inch guns were just to long for some of the jobs we did. The full size M4's were too long and cumbersome to work in the small haji sized cars we rolled in.

I have not shot it beyond 50 meters yet, but it was more than combat accurate at this distance.

Wes (and Paul) do nice work, despite his lack of frequency here.

He builds one nice rifle. They run well, and you will soon be able to buy a very nice shorty can from SureFire to go on it. That should make indoor work even more pleasant.

Paul is a cool guy and they make some cool stuff. I like the MSTN QCB on my Match rifle.

Gentlemen,

I have had a chance to put some more rounds through this upper. I am still very impressed with it and I highly recommend MSTN products and service.

I like the whole upper but one of the components that really stands out is the flash hider. It is a Yankee Hill Machine 52C. The company describes it as a “Comp/Flash hider”.

It does a great job minimizing the flash as well as helping with muzzle control and noise. Anyone who has shot a 10.5 knows what I am talking about.

I have never used any YHM products before but I really like this piece of kit and highly recommend it if you are in the market for one.

Thanks,

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS.

IT'S PRETTY AMAZING HOW MUCH NOISE THE PHANTOM 5C2 SEEMS TO ELIMINATE FOR THE SHOOTER. PLUS, IT'S A MUCH BETTER FLASH SUPPRESSOR THAN THE STANDARD A2, SURPASSED ONLY BY THE VORTEX IN THIS REGARD.

ANOTHER THING WE DO TO THESE SHORTIES DURING THEIR 3-MAG TEST FIRING IS FIRE LAP THE BARRELS USING KG-2. IT SEEMS TO YIELD A BARREL THAT SHOOTS AMAZINGLY WELL, VERY QUICKLY, WITH MINIMUM FOULING. AS MUCH AS MID-SOUTH INSTITUTE FOLKS LIKE YOURSELF SHOOT, THIS SHOULD PROVE TO BE SIGNIFICANT.

GOOD SHOOTING,

WES GRANT

Wes:

Don't be shy, step on over to the Intro thread and let the guys know who you are.

Guys:

Wes at MSTN is one of my favorite gun plumbers, parts vendors, and dinner partners.

He is a great guy as well, despite being a jarhead AND an Airedale. Pretty good shot as well.

SERPENT5XX;
thanks for feedback on the comp...I've had one of those new sitting in the pack for a year now. Was saving it for the 14.5, but may now give it a go on the 10.5.
TR, how are those surefire cans you mentioned looking - any specs/feedback out yet?
salud,

It has been some time since I did business with Wes, but I cannot endorse him highly enough.

He built an upper for me, as well, and it is a beauty.

Shorty cans are not in production yet, I believe that they are in the queue though.

As soon as I get one to hold on to, you will see it.

The specs of the FA556K are:

16 ounces, 6" OAL, adds 3.75" past end of comp adaptor or 5.5" to the overall barrel length, 1.5" diameter, up to 30 fps MV increase, 24 to 27dB noise reduction.

HTH.

Will they utilize the same fast attach (tm) system?

Different comp adapter, obviously, since there is very little real estate forward of the front sight assembly on a 10.5" gun.

Better latch itself with one handed installation and removal.

Very trick!

Exclamation 10.5 barrel

Great company, great rig! dont know if you know it but watch taking that off post or around people that you dont know. unless the total length is 16 inch (barrel) then it is classified as a Short Barrel rifle that you need a $200.00 tax stamp on. also that auto bolt carrier that you have would also get you in some trouble, as ATFE classifi. it as an automatic weapon even if it is on a semi auto lower. (10 year, 10 grand) All of this is null and void if you are just using it on a M-4 lower. Great system though,
