Ruger GP100

I was recently in the states and my father in law offered to give me one of his guns, a Ruger GP 100. It is in near new condition. My question is since I am stationed in Germny it is kind of a hassle to get guns over here and I wondering if it is worth trying or should I wait until I get back stateside (Jun 07)? It will mostly be for the wife to have in the house while I am deployed. I don't know much about revolvers and I would appreciate any expert advice that I could get. Thanks.
