Anybody get a chance to check these out at SHOT? I would appreciate any thoughts.

RL,
I think they're made by Liberty for HK...they farm that stuff out...their folding knife is an emerson, the boots are Bates, lighter is Zippo, etc.

So are you paying a markup for the HK mark without getting HK quality?

no, their quality is there...they dictate the specs and it's built for them, so worth the $$'s....not just a logo

RL,
I recently bought a safe from these guys. They are in the Valley. I was pleased with their service and pricing. They didn't have HK though.

Thanks very much. There also is a manufacturer in Long Beach. We are doing some remodeling in our house, and the new gun safe is going to have its own little custom-made spot. Anyone know any reason why I can't put it next to a big wine storage thingamajigy?

Your guns might get uppity and your wine could become surly, but other than that you're probably ok.

Be sure yo get one of these for it !! I've had one in my Safe for about 25 years and they work !!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search.html...d=Golden%20Rod
For what Team Sergeant referred to, we did see this company at Shot !! Try here:
http://www.gunvault.com/
Also, Academy Sports carries them as does Cheaper Than Dirt.

AM-
I saw where they are now making a fingerprint Identification gunvault. Only question I have is howling it takes the onboard electronics to open the safe when you really need it. One finger on top and it opens automatically. That sounds good for the middle of the night, dark, under stress and epinephrine dump situations compared to trying to type in a code with all five fingers.
Anyone know or tried one of these out yet?

Sounds like you have a dealer with a forked tongue. (Time to find an honest dealer.)

I would think that it doesn't take long for an electric motor to fire up and retract the bolt.
The fingerprint scanner by itself does not necessarily induce a time lag. It can be very fast.
What I might be cautious about is the fingerprint scanner's sensitivity. I have a builtin fingerprint scanner on my laptop which can be set to three levels of security. With the highest level set, it can easily read the finger without much effort, but it is rather strict that you put it the almost EXACT same way you did when you recorded the finger.
With practice you'll get it right faster, first try. Under stress, however, I'm not sure I'd want to fiddle around practicing finger dexterity.
Try it in a store first and check its sensitivity to angles, pressure and tilt.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info Martin. I have no experience with personally owned fingerprint ID'ing devices. THat helped as I had not thought of some of those potential problems.

RL-
FWIW, I was cruising Academy Sports this afternoon and came across this for $59. It works great, runs on 8 AA batteries, has a key override if needed, has a motion detector alarm built-in to sound off if someone is fumbling around with it, and uses a five digit code. I played with it and the actual namebrand GunVault at the store. I actually found that this one was much easier to manipulate the buttons than the GunVault. The door is spring loaded and it has access holes to mount permanently (well semi-permanent) either in a closet, car, or on a wall.
It is not bad at all for the price at all either. I bought one and I really like it.
