I picked this up yesterday as a gift for a guy leaving the team. It has all of the origional russian markings on it. 7.62x54r

Anyone ever shoot one?

I've shot a couple of different ones, they all kick like mules and most of them that I have been around actually shot better with the Bayonet fixed. In my experience they are not tremendously accurate, but the muzzle blast is quite impressive.

My sentiments exactly.

That carbine with a steel buttplate will kick the snot out of you.

He is a fluent russian speaker, that has spent a great deal of time in the FSU and appreciated the soviet markings on the rifle......

We'll be out at range 135 on wednsday of this week shooting this and other and the SVD.......

where will you be?

I had hoped to get back over to the gunshow to pick up a couple of M91s the guy had........but unfortunately I"ve spent all day "recovering" from the teamparty last night........

Have you considered the Finnish M39 or other Finnish variants?

I've not physically looked at the M39.

From what I can tell looking at them on gunbroker.com, they were captured russian rifles that were reworked prior to fielding.

The price range is similar to the M91, so I may have to keep my eyes open for one at the next gunshow.

The different Finnish rifles were rebuilt from Russian actions in various configurations. In overall quality, the M39 variant is at the very top of Mosin Nagant variants.

Thanks for the link, there are some fine looking rifles pictured there. There is a rare model of this rifle, supposedly a true sniper variant, where the bolt does not stick straight out from the rifle, but lays along side the stock. Have you ever seen this variation?

To answer your question all true 1891/30's sniper variants have a bent bolt(which is I believe what you are referencing). This is to accomodate the 4x scope that came with them. The Hungarian model is an exact copy of this rifle and all came with this bolt. If you own one with a date stamp prior to 1930, it may in all actuality be a modified Dragoon rifle.

You can buy an aftermarket bent bolt conversion kit for extremely cheap. I put one on my 1944, but as stated above in this thread somewhat pointless to put a scope on the carbine as it kicks like a sawed of 12 gauge. If you want "accuracy", stick with the M91/30. It did Zaytsev well I suppose.

Bottom line, the Mosin is a fun affordable rifle. I picked up a M91/30 and M44 for under two hundred for the pair.
