Ultrasonic cleaners are also excellent for CD's and DVD's if you have young children around the house who like to "help" put in movies/music.
What a loving spouse to get something to preserve the better half's jewelry and favorite music/movies. 
On a side note - any recommendations for brand/make of cleaner?

I use Militec and Breakfree on most everything. I had an ultrasonic cleaner but I'm too impatient to waitI also shoot a lot of black powder.
The standard solvent for that is free...hot water.

I apologize for the lack of clarity in my previous post - any recommendations for or against any particular ultrasonic cleaners?
Edit to add:
A quick google search come up with many different cleaners - does one need to get a cleaner specifically designed for firearms or would a standard cleaner large enough to fit the stripped firearm in the tank suffice? Regardless, the task-specific cleaning solution seems like a good idea.
Any thoughts?

Branson and Crest are both decent.
I would consider getting one large enough for a handgun. One that size will also handle bolts and other long gun small parts.
I recommend one with a tank heater and a timer. You will need a basket and a cover as well as some cleaning solution.

A couple of years ago I purchased the HCS-200 ULTRASONIC HANDGUN CLEANING SYSTEM from Brownell's, per the recommendation of this board.
I have been very pleased with it.
It is well worth the investment.
