I don't think I ever said it was Surgicalcric.

The advice was given to me in answer to a question re:seizure care for me by my family when out hiking in the wild woods. I'm the one who has seizures, and have -- in the past -- bitten a hunk out of my tongue. I believe the tongue depressor was suggested because I didn't want to eat the rest of my tongue. The main focus of the advice I was given is as follows:

"Protection of your melon is foremost, body parts second. Make sure everyone is educated on your condition and even run a scenario or two with EVERYONE who you are going out with so they ALL know what to do in case you have a siezure. Otherwise it will be your luck to be with the ONE person who is clueless...and it could cost you your life.

You should not be restrained during your activity, and should be placed in the recovery position for your post-ictal period. You of course know this part...once you regain consciousness...simple fluid rehydration and if necessary, the sugar compound IN PARTS...NOT ALL AT ONCE can be tolerated until you are able to stand again."

Good advice, I think.

Thanks for the explanation re:bite force, etc. It is my experience, however, that I put more pressure on the right back teeth than anyplace else. Maybe I have a weird mouth. I have had my wisdom teeth removed and seemed to change my bite.

I don't think anyone has tried to place anything in my mouth during a seizure for years -- but I really don't remember. lol

LRD-
Pm back at ya. BTW- why not post a new thread about Seizures in this forum... everyone needs to review basic TX , Do's and Don'ts and helpful tips for epilepsy.

Just a suggestion...NDD might tell you a love poem or something if you did, he likes med threads. Although after reading all the threads I missed this weekend, he seems to be "wooing" Solid right now with compliments so you may have to wait your turn behind the 18yr boy with a British accent and self proclaimed "pretty mouth"!!! LOL HAHAHA

hijack over-
Back to first aid kit for home, any more suggestions or things everyone feels are not needed for the average person?

I learned this after having a college student seize on me during his final exam, which I was proctoring. There were 100 students and he was on the second row in seating that was bolted to the floor and close together. With the assistance of the strongest-looking guy in the class, we moved him to the floor one row down while I sent the TA to call 911. His friends in the class said he had no history of seizures that they were aware of. He confirmed that to me two days later. I had the class continue their exam, while I sat with him to make sure his head didn't hit the bottom concrete riser, but otherwise, just monitored visually for continued breathing.

Is a "Purell" type hand sanitizer worth including in a FAK?

Sten-
it is a good idea to keep one of the watrerless hand sanitizers in the FAK, not as good as surgical soap, brush and water, but better than a stream or sand if you are in an area that is arid and you'r low on potable water.
