Imagine you are sitting out in the jungle at night, a little "scared", and out of the corner of your eye you sinse movement. Can cause an attitude that someone may not be prepared for.
Shoot them with suppressed pistol, or whack their head off.

Reminds me of hunter a couple of years back who saw a Mt. Lion stalking him in Northwestern Montana.
Guy dropped his rifle to take out his pistol. When he couldn't get his pistol out in time he turned and ran. The cat hit him from behind into a tree and knocked him out. For some reason the cat decided it wasn't worth it. (no protein?) All kidding aside, cat hit the tree too. Lucky dude wearing a good backpack is the only thing that saved his dumbass.
I carry a high quality neck knife ($185, Wilson Combat or Spartan) clipped to my belt, parallel to it, and in Kydex for quick, no fumble either hand removal. Never falls out if setup right. Used for rope cutting, field butchering, gutting, digging, prying, etc. daily. It's light, out of the way, and scary sharp.
As someone else pointed out, if I have to pull it because a cat, bear, or somethin' else is on me, I messed up bad. If I can't bring it to bear in an eye blink then I also deserve the good beating that's on its way.
