Finally got my authorization letter. Only took about 3 months.
Hopefully they are still producing the knives.

Pretty sure they are.
The Chris Reeve Knife shop still makes the knives as and only as directed by USASOC.
From a previous comment here, the Yarborough Knife is the soldiers to keep but as the rules surrounding that project dictate, the knife cannot be sold.
If one is seen for sale on the open market, that is a problem.
I imagine there may be a way for this to happen like if a soldier is lost in combat and the family does not know of or value the knife.
Theft is also a possibility.
The serial number of the each Yarborough knife is kept in a secure log.
There is also a replacement policy in place in case of loss.

This thread has answered a question that has been in the back of my mind for years. That is: why did I receive a Yarborough with such a low serial number? 0084 in 2009? The "SF" explains it all. I knew it was at least a second offering to former SF guys. But the serial number was just one problem. I have two sons. Both want my Yarborough. Solomon's solution is non-applicable in this case. Some one in my SFA chapter told me about the "First in Asia" knife. Problem solved! (I never served in 1st SFGA, but the proceeds go to the First in Asia Fund, a worthy cause and made my boys quit fighting!) Another serial numbered SF knife I have picked up is the Larry Thorne/Lauri Torni Puukko. Again, divide and conquer. I have serial numbers 2 and 42. From the accompanying documents and conversations with the man that had them made, they were supposed to be awards for members of 10th SFGA. IDK if any were ever issued in that context. They advertised for sale in "The Drop" at one point.

Still available? I'm old and slow and late to the party.

I sent this thread and purchase info to my 84 year old father (77th, 1st, 6th, 5th, Tng Gp) and he said, "I don't think I need a knife" (he's also a retired cop and still carries).
Two days later I received an email from him saying that he'd faxed in his DD214 and is now in the holding pattern.
Hopefully he'll get the Yarborough in enough time to appreciate it. His health is failing .... he only plays two rounds of golf a week now.
Thanks!

My Dad now has his Yarborough knife in hand as of 11 Dec 2013!
Well, miracle of miracles, I finally received my Yarborough Knife and it’s a beauty. The serial number is SF 0xxx, made November 19, 2013. The blade is 7” and the handle is Black Canvas Micarta. They make a wall Special Forces Knife Display which I might get later on. Thank you for telling me about them. It’s taken awhile to get it, just wish we had it back in the ‘Nam days.
Many thanks to PS.com for making the Yarborough Knife known to us.

I sent copies of the pertinents and a letter requesting an authorization letter last week. Hopefully USASOC and Chris Reeves are still making the knives available.
This post is what led me to the QP forum.

Sad news! Just talked to an SF Trooper that graduated from the "Q" Course yesterday. They are no longer issuing the Yarborough Knife to the graduates.
This was a fantastic tradition and I hate to see this way of honoring Luitenant General Yarborough and our troops going away. While I didn't receive one when I graduated I was always happy to see new troopers get one. It was a way of letting the troopers know that they were now a part of the Regiment.
With all the fraud waste and abuse that goes on and the fact that this guys give so much in a time when not all are required to serve, I find the situation very sad.

So true.
Only the honor grads will now get the Yarborough Knives.
I guess after spending a year and a million dollars training a soldier headed for combat, giving him a $300 knife was too much.
This should save the command as much as $200,000 per year, or about one contractor.

Any chance of setting up a way to hook these graduates up through donations to an outside organization such as gbf? Or would the funding requirement likely be too difficult to achieve?

That would take $250,000 per year and there might be some legal issues.

As infuriating as it seemed, at first, giving it some thought, the Beret itself is the real reward from the Army. As a parent, I would love the honor of buying and presenting to my son the Yarborough as my own token of recognition for his effort and success. They just need to make that option available.

Just a hypothetical thought; my son is not pursuing that course. The important thing would be to have a serialized blade in line with his classmates. Kind of like class rings.
