A Quarryville soldier was killed in an attack Sunday in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Patrick H. Quinn, 26, died of injuries sustained when the enemy attacked his base in Paktika Province with small-arms fire, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

A 2005 graduate of Solanco High School, Quinn joined the Army as an infantryman in 2006 and currently was a Green Beret, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, in Fort Carson, Colo.

Quinn served at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and Fort Bliss, Texas, and completed a combat deployment to Iraq from September 2008 to August 2009.

He graduated from the Special Forces Qualifications Course this year and joined the 10th Special Forces Group in July as an engineer sergeant, Maj. Aram Donigian, a spokesman for the 10th Special Forces Group, told The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Army officials said Quinn's military education includes the Northern Warfare Course, Combatives Level 2, Combat Life Saver Course, Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Basic Military Mountaineering School, Airborne School and the Special Forces Qualification Course.

His awards and decorations include four Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, Special Forces Tab, Parachutist Badge and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Quinn was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the NATO Medal.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.

RIP soldier. Prayers out for your team mates and family.

On another note, the following excerpt appears to provide more information than was released originally by the DOD. It appears on the surface that some government types are afraid the full story would piss off a lot of folks. Obviously this doesn't diminish the grief of the loved ones and team mates, but still .....

US soldier shot dead in 'insider attack' in south-eastern Afghanistan

Man wearing Afghan security forces uniform opens fire on Nato-led coalition troops in tenth such incident this year

An Afghan man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot at US soldiers in south-eastern Afghanistan, killing at least one serviceman on Sunday, local officials and the Nato-led coalition said.

The so-called "insider attack" in Paktika province is the fourth in less than a month and is likely to strain already tense ties between coalition troops and their allies, with most foreign troops scheduled to withdraw by the end of next year. A Reuters tally shows Sunday's incident was the tenth this year, and took the death toll of foreign personnel to 15.

"A man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot at Americans in Sharana city [the provincial capital] near the governor's office," said an Afghan official, adding that two soldiers had been hit by the gunfire......
