I have known LTC Martin for a few years now. In fact, he lives just three house away from me. I have no problem with him or with enormous contributions that he has made to better Soldiers. He is a good man for doing so. I am not sure how many would do the same. That is not the issue.
I do not agree with ANY book that is out there. I don't care who wrote it.
As to your question are we born to be SF. Damn right we are. There is something that separates us from the those that don't make it, something that we all have in common. Don't believe that, take a book count in the shack of shame. I'm sure you find more with the losers and less with the winners.
How did I ever get through the Q-Course without a book to guide me? Really glad that common sense thing worked out for me.

Way back when... (ask TR, TS, Peregrino, me, and a host of others)... you had a packing list and a report time and date, everything after that it was at the whim of the cadre... there were no prep books/courses/pre-assessments/coaching... you reported in shape, with your stuff, with your mind right and your flexibility ready... IF you were supposed to make it you did, if not, you filled the needs of the Army or went back to your unit much better trained than when you left.
I have much respect for LTC Martin, but the book is a guide for those who need external justification that they may not make it... (sorry, Sir, but you didn't need a prep book, you wrote a good one though)
TR said it right... look at my signature line - there is no magic bullet.
Packing list, morals, ethics, heart and hitting each targetl as it is presented by the cadre while using your common sense/following instructions - that's all you need.

Packing List!?! You get a packing list now? In January 1971, I showed up with my life in a file folder and a duffle bag!! And the TAC's threw half of that stuff out...

You should probably grab some SA MK. I take things different than most, but to me it looks as if you want to start a pissing contest with your third post on this board. Go back and do some reading of the rules here. Thanks.........

Just not the same...
I've realized through this train up for SFAS that 'sneaker boots' just don't cut it. I started (and am continuing) my training in Original Issue Desert Boots. Learned things about my feet that I never knew before putting them through such stress. Soft spots hardened. Hot spots became resilient with proper foot care. And I honestly feel like I made the boot mine.
Last week I bought the Nike Special Field Boot, and although they look great and are very comfortable, I don't feel like they are good for anything other than wearing at work for 12-13 hours a day. Obviously I could see where they would be beneficial (i.e. urban enviornments and short missions where INFIL is not done by trek), but def not the case over long distances. I ruck to and from work (which is only about 2 miles each way) on top of my other rucks throughout the week, and ALWAYS use my issue boots. Well last week, I tried wearing the Nike's just to see how they would work (knowing full well that I wouldn't be wearing them at SFAS). The ruck started out great, but I soon realized that I missed my issue boots. ha! Almost like I was cheating on them. So for now, the Nike's will get me through the work day and go right back on the shelf when I get home.
