We have lost our "ferocity". Couple that with a spineless (bowing) administration and you have a recipe to deter, absolutely nothing.

hopefully its a recipe to unleash hell at the ballot box in Nov.

Al Qaeda can be expected to attempt an attack on the United States in the next three to six months, senior U.S. intelligence officials told Congress Tuesday.

The terrorist organization is deploying operatives to the United States to carry out new attacks from inside the country, including "clean" recruits with a negligible trail of terrorist contacts, CIA Director Leon Panetta said. Al Qaeda is also inspiring homegrown extremists to trigger violence on their own, Panetta added.
Talk about a double standard. When the previous administration issued these kinds of projections, it was criticized for fear mongering. Now it is evidence that the current administration is 'doing its job.'

Also, what the heck does "expected to attempt" mean? IMO, this is the kind of CYA vagueness that has helped the public loose focus on GWOT.

The United States of America will not win the Global War on Terrorism.

Collectively it has neither the guts, focus, nor determination to make Islamic fanatics hesitate or think twice. It will take something worse than 9-11 to change that.

When we have the determination to go medieval, to inflict casualties in Biblical proportions, to make them fear mischief and jackassery will they cower, hide, and reconsider the slaughter of innocents.

Until then the prudent intelligence community can ensure their future by simply stating the bad guys are still evil, still hanging around, and still trying to kill us and end our way of life.

No-brainer.

I agree with these sentiments, but the Russians did some of this in Afghanistan (and I suspect have done a lot of it clandestinely), yet they still get attacked. I have not had direct contact with these people and am very interested in the views of you guys who have, but I'm not sure they can be deterred. They do not seem to be rational. Which would mean we have to disable or kill them.

Must be why Administration Zero and the DOJ are rolling on the State of Arizona and buffoons like the Hutaree......and ignore Homie Shabazz and the cozy Religion of Peace compounds that dot the landscape.

You might consider the ferocity of the Admin has increasingly been directed on those 'they serve' to deter the people from self-achieved Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Fear always plays well during the election and budget cycles.

And so it goes...

At the risk of getting badly out of my lane...

The Russian problem was that they did not hit targets valued by the enemy leadership. They killed lots of people, true enough - but those had no value to the Islamic leaders. The rate of population increase in Islamic countries, along with the lack of present opportunities and economic growth, at least suggests a need to reduce the population, whether through emigration or jihad. Thus, the Russians were not hurting the overall Islamic effort. To the contrary, they helped them deal with a large, restive, and young population.

I would contend that they are, in aggregate - although not always individually - acting completely rationally, given their underlying assumptions. Those assumptions seem to include a free ticket to a great afterlife, one which they believe in deeply, if they die while involved in their jihads. When we kill them, even in large numbers, we merely facilitate movement from a harsh existence to a much more desirable state.

To fight them effectively, it seems we must either 1) reduce the population such that they no longer experience the effects of overpopulation, or 2) threaten targets valued by the leadership, or 3) change the underlying assumptions.

Item 1 would probably require removing on the order of 80% of the involved population, given growth rates over the last 60 years. Item 2 would involve targets in nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran. Item 3 seems likely to require a long-term effort - true generational warfare.

Item 1 - Sinister said it best.

Item 2 - Sinister said it best.

Item 3 - We can't afford it. In addition, Sinister said it best.

MOO. YMMV.

The Russians

How many Russians were kidnapped back in 70's-early 80's in Lebanon? I have read that fear played a big part.

And accept that Islam is at war with us and to thoroughly discredit the fairy tale it is a "Great Religion" that has been hijacked by extremists or a "Religion of Peace."

Maybe they just need a New Testament and a Reformation, too. I'm sure Glen Beck could hook them up with a few ghostwriters to ensure their tales (visions) are correctly related to the readers...seeing as how it's an ages olde tradition among such illiterati and all.

One could view that as changing their underlying assumptions.

But I wonder - and perhaps either you or Sigaba could comment on this - didn't the reformation occur at the same time as the Renaissance, with the combined effects of a new flowering of knowledge and improved economics? That seems as if it would be difficult to trigger.

As for their New Testament, we may get to see that sooner rather than later.

LINK

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has out-crazied Ahmadinejad, who only wrote letters to the Hidden Imam in the Jamkaran well and said he was guided by God in preparing the way for the Imam’s intervention. According to a senior cleric, Khamenei is telling his inner circle that he has actually met the Hidden Imam and that he promised to appear during Khamenei’s tenure as Supreme Leader.

Obscure source, no established reliability, definitely open to challenge...but an interesting possibility, nonetheless.

All depends on who you talk to and - much like the arguments over the Founding Fathers and original intent - far more complex.

See section 5 - Historiography - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaiss...r_Renaissances

Maybe...maybe not - depending upon whether you are talking about the myth of the so-called Renaissance or the reality of the time period(s) then and now.

And so it goes...

Based on your snarky reference to another thread, are we to conclude you believe the official position that Islam is a 'Great Religion that has been hijacked by extremists' and a 'Religion of Peace?'
