More like the same gene pool and home environment.
Bad parenting by burnout hippie rejects is not a good solution.

But, but...California must be a great place...All the "Stars" live there, right?

Yes, California is a terrible place. Everyone from here is terrible. Ronald Reagan, John Wayne, Emigdio Elizarraras . . .

I once read that The Duke was so disgusted with home that he considered moving to an island in Mexico before he became terminally ill.

If I may post a real qick aside...
RL--I lived there five years, and visit as often as I can. My best friends are L.A. residents, and of course, You live there! So, it is not a terrible place!
It is different than here on the prarie, but that is why it is special IMHO.
Now back to the topic at hand...

My Grandmother has been living in the Bay Area for the last 40 years, they retired there so they could be near Presido of San Francisco. My Grandfather is buried there. I think she's one of the best people on the planet and definitely one of the best patriots - so California can't be all bad.

California has a similar stereo type as NY. A lot of people don't realize upstate NY has some of the best Hunting and outdoor wilderness areas in the NE. Upstate is also very Conservative. Northern California is similar to upstate NY. But California will always be known for it's Hollywood left wing image. NY will always be known for that cesspool of a City that sucks the State dry.

Before we moved to AZ we were stationed at Ft. Drum and you are right - different folks up in northern NY. Hillary would visit occasionally and she didn't dare leave the Watertown airport for her rallies that generally brought about 30 people out. As we were PCSing last fall she came up for one such rally and made the statement that she'd "saved" Ft. Drum from the BRAC list. Ummm - yeah, it was soooo on the chopping block.
You've got to drive at least 30 minutes north of the Golden Gate to leave the Twilight Zone. My grandma lives well within Crazy-Lib town limits nowadays unfortunately, but the community she currently lives in is filled with the Greatest Generation - so it's a safe haven.

CA actually is a very conservative state once you get outside of LA and San Francisco.

Sir, Agreed. Having lived there for a time, I concur with what RL says.
