Army Mountain Warfare School - Summer Phase.

School Site: https://www.benning.army.mil/amws/

Great school covering the technical aspects of mountaineering, climbing, knots and rope systems, altitude illnesses/treatment, and, of course, humping a ruck uphill...

The winter phase covers winter survival (snow caves etc), skiing, snoeshoeing, ice climbing, etc.

Had a QP in my squad as a matter of fact. Told him about the site.

I did the summer phase back in '91. Great, but little known course, especially for conventional guys. Never got a chance to do the winter phase, so no ram's head for me.

Winter phase is reserved 5-18 JAN. From what I understand, it's easier (technically) than summer, with the exception of freezing your balls off. I hope the cadre have a sense of humor, b/c I'm a non-skiing mofo.

91? It was still a pretty new course back then - founded in 86. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Getting Selected, the book

Howdy.
Just ordered the book - a really easy way to support the good guys.
Does it apply to the new, experimental 2 week SFAS as well as as it does the 'normal' 3 week class? I'm assuming the lessons therein will be generally applicable rather than highly targeted.

Not as much rucking in the winter phase compared to summer. Plus you should already know all your knots. Once you've got your "coveted ram's head device", check out the assault climber course. I went through when it was run by a pretty cool SSG. There were about ten of us in the class. 100% civies Really cool stuff..

Wrote it so it would be evergreen...you'll still be walking long distances with weight on your back and blisters will still be an enemy....

Always looking for appropriate updates & corrections from guys fresh off the course to integrate into each reprint....

Speaking of reprints, 4th reprinting is hot off the press and shipping this week...with another 1,000 copies going straight to SOWF. They won't be running out any time soon!

Cheers!

WM-

Finished reading the book, sir - great stuff... for any course. I guess the stats on selection speak for themselves - well done!

I have just received the book and I must say, it is an excellent resource to say the least! Big thanks to Major Joe Martin, Master Sergeant Rex Dodson, and everyone else invovled in the creation of this book.

Just ordered the book as well and am anxiously awaiting my mailbox to get pregnant . Thanks for the advice WM!

Now off to do more PT.....

Did that sound normal in your head when you typed it? It sure didn't come out that way.
