comparison remington 700p to 5r milspec

I introduced myself a while back, I pretty much just read when i'm here, anyways I would like a bit of advice on a purchase i'm making soon. The guys at the gun shops in my area are not much help in answering my questions, and i've done a good amount of research but i don't have all the info i want and I feel this is a good resource. My question is this: What is the difference between a basic Remington 700p and the 5r milspec model? I only care about the action and barrel as I'm planning on using a different stock. i know the 5r comes with the 1 in 11.25 milspec barrel, and a low end h&s stock but what is the difference in the action?, or is it smarter to just buy the inexpensive 700p and drop it in a decent stock? I also looked at the new tactical 700 but it seems to be the same thing as the 5r sans stock. Any help I can get from people who know I would greatly appreciate. If I had a bigger budget I would just get a sako trg22

I don't know where you are getting your model designations, but Remington catalogs neither of the variants you listed in their consumer, military, or LE product lines.

There is a Model 700, which comes in a Varmint and a Police version, the Custom Shop M-40, and the M24 military rifle.

Last time I checked, 5R was a type of rifling, not a weapon.

I was checking prices of various guns and I came across this "5r milspec" on this online store: http://www.snipercountrypx.com/pc-49...stock-now.aspx seems to be some kind of limited production model. at the website they call it the "r5" and the "5r" I don't know which is correct. It just caught my attention because it says it comes with the same barrel as the m24 sws, and I assume that's pretty good stuff. When i said 700p I was referring to the 700 police model. That 5R does not appear to be a Remington cataloged rifle, which means that someone is pulling the barrels and replacing them for SC.com to sell. "5R" is a specific type of rifling that has less sharp profiles on the lands, you can google that for yourself.

Further, the ad does not seem to say what you think it does. The text reads "the same type rifling used in the M-24 sniper rifles". That is like saying that a Yugo has the same type of gasoline internal combustion engine as an AMG Mercedes. It isn't quite the same item, just a similar type rifling.

The Rem LTR is not a bad rifle. The trigger will suck, the barrel may or may not shoot well, and the chamber will have too much freebore. That is mainly due to litigation and is all correctable by a good smith. It can be made to outshoot the Sako for a lot less money. There is nothing wrong with the H-S stock, I have one on a Rem 700 PSS in .308 that will hold under .5 MOA with good ammo. I am not a fan of the Bell and Carlson stocks though.

Frankly, unless you have some significant trigger time, the money is better spent on ammo and practice than on high end gear and gadgets.

Unless you know them personally. Gun Stores are trying to make a sale. What they have in stock is going to be equal or better then what your looking for. I always have the same frame of mind in Gun Stores as I do in Auto Dealerships.
There is great knowledge on this site and other similar web sites concerning weapons. Notice I only said weapons. If you find the same answer or data multiple times on the web. It's probably good to go. I have been researching information about modifying my FAL. It took time, but I finally got it straight. I came across some really bad advice doing this research, scary.

TR gave solid answers to your questions. A 700 action is a 700 action. I wouldn't get hung up on Remington barrels either.

My advice to you is to head to a gun show and search the used rifles for a beaten up Remington 700 hunting rifle. You should be able to get one for about a hundred bucks. Buy it for the action and then have done what you want done.
