Range 1 in NC

Anyone have any feedback on Range 1 up by Lillington? Just as a range to go plinking at. The indoor ranges at Jims and Guns Plus (Guns Plus is a whole 'nother story in and of itself, suffice it to say that they will never get any of my business ever again) aren't doing it for me anymore, and don't really feel like going to McKellars.

If its good, I might get a membership there. Wife still needs to go through CCW classes as well. So any input on the range/ownership/staff as well as the CCW course there would be appreciated.

Been out there once or twice. Pretty user friendly, our unit has actually rented the range before to shoot at.

I went out there once in the Q course. Thats the one right there between Pope and State Road 24 to the north of Pope right? Well anyway the people there are really nice and willing to listen. I don't know however if it'd be worth making the drive over instead of just using McKellars. They don't have a better pistol facility as of 2006 when I last went there. But give it a shot if you are looking for a change.

P.S. If you are just looking to get away and shoot then look for some farmers with alot of land in your area and pay them 20 bucks a year. I've been doing that since I was a kid living in Pinehurst, NC. Hell they might just do it for a case of beer. Just don't ask during hunting season but other than that it gets the deer used to the sound of gunfire outside of season.

**I don't think that I need to tell you to check the local regulations and with the local authorities on the discharging of a firearm outside of a state registered range.**

We use to rent it out for a day to conduct the stress shoot. It put the students in a unfamiliar environment. I liked it and would prefer it to mckellers. You can do a lot more running and gunning on Range one. If you purchase your own metal targets I am sure they would have no problem with you setting them up. If you have a group of shooters you could set up your own scenarios or competitions on Range one. I don't think mckellers lets you do that.

I've been out there 6-8 times in the years it's been open. You definitely need to check their website for current operating hours. http://www.range-1.com/ The website also does a fair job of representing the range and its programs. The range and affiliated facilities have pros & cons depending on what you're looking for. If you are "vetted" (by the range staff) it's possible to do some decent training. In contrast, McKellar's is very restrictive for anything more than plinking/zeroing. FWIW - I'm debating a membership there myself (probably later in the spring). Peregrino

I don´t think you are talking about the same range. Range 1 is roughly halfway between Spring Lake and Lillington.

I think there are two different levels of users at Range 1. If you just show up, pay a daily user fee, then the range you´ll use is for nothing more than plinking and sighting in rifles and probably isn´t much different than McKellar´s.

However, I know of one person that has a long-term membership and uses the side ranges to shoot steel, shoot while moving, etc. (ie practice for USPSA and IDPA). Obviously, there is some sort of vetting process but I don´t know what it is.

Range 1 holds some IDPA-ish matches on Saturdays in the summer, including some low-light matches.

There is also my range. Not much, just a cleared out area on my land. But plenty of steel to shoot and room to move. It's always open to anyone on here. Of course in the last few years I have never been home for any length of time to use it much. After this gig (June) I will be working in the states and have the time, so I will set a date for everyone who lives near the Bragg area to come out and shoot. But pictures will be posted......lol
