Green Beret dies during training at Stuttgart

Stars and Stripes European edition,
Friday, July 1, 2005

STUTTGART, Germany — A 40-year-old Army Special Forces soldier died of heart complications after collapsing during a run in Stuttgart on Monday, U.S. European Command officials announced Thursday.

The soldier, Master Sgt. Christopher Keith, was running with other members of the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces (Airborne), at a training area near Panzer Kaserne before work when he collapsed, said EUCOM spokeswoman Capt. Beverly Mock. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a German hospital in Böblingen, Mock said.

Keith was from Lyman, S.C., and had served in the military 21 years. He is survived by his wife, Kelley, and their two children, Makenzie and Ashton.

Memorial contributions to the “Makenzie & Ashton Keith Family Fund” can be mailed to Wachovia Bank, Attn: Nancy Hammer, 15 South Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203.
