Attack on Danish Cartonist Failed

Somali shot after allegedly attempting to attack Danish cartoonist
STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- A Somali man was shot as he allegedly tried to enter the home of Danish political cartoonist Kurt Westergaard -- known for his controversial depictions of the Muslim prophet Mohammad -- on Saturday, police said.

The 27-year-old man, who was not identified, wielded an ax and a knife and cracked a window at Westergaard's home in Aarhus, said police spokesman Morten Jensen. A home alarm alerted police to the scene at 10 p.m., and they were attacked by the man, he said.

The officers shot the man in the right leg and left hand. He was hospitalized, but was not seriously injured, police said.

Westergaard's caricature of Mohammed -- which depicted the prophet wearing a bomb as a turban with a lit fuse -- sparked an uproar among Muslims in early 2006 after newspapers reprinted the images months later as a matter of free speech. The cartoon was first published by the Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jullands-Posten in September 2005.

At the time, Westergaard said he wanted his cartoon to say that some people exploited the prophet to legitimize terror. However, many in the Muslim world interpreted the drawing as depicting their prophet as a terrorist.

Over the years, Danish authorities have arrested other suspects who allegedly plotted against Westergaard's life.

After three such arrests were made in February 2008, Westergaard issued a statement, saying, "Of course I fear for my life after the Danish Security and Intelligence Service informed me of the concrete plans of certain people to kill me. However, I have turned fear into anger and indignation. It has made me angry that a perfectly normal everyday activity which I used to do by the thousand was abused to set off such madness."

Danish cartoonist intruder shot

From todays beeb:

Quote:
Danish cartoonist intruder shot
Danish police have shot and wounded a man at the home of Kurt Westergaard, whose cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad sparked an international row.

Mr Westergaard was at home in Aarhus when a man broke in armed with a knife. Police arrived and shot the man after Mr Westergaard pressed a panic alarm.

Danish officials said the intruder was a 28-year-old Somali linked to the radical Islamist al-Shabab militia.

The cartoon, printed in 2005, prompted violent protests the following year.

This attack will force the Danish secret service Pet to review whether their protection is adequate.
Mr Westergaard's house was supposed to have been turned into a fortress. The windows were supposed to be blast proof, and yet a determined individual came within a whisker of killing a man regarded by Muslims as a pariah, but by his supporters, as one of the bravest defenders of free expression.

One of 12 cartoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten, it depicted the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban.

In 2006 the paper apologised for the cartoons, but other European media reprinted them.

Danish embassies were then attacked by Muslims around the world and dozens killed in riots.

Mr Westergaard went into hiding amid threats to his life, but emerged last year saying he wanted to live as normal a life as possible.

His house has been heavily fortified and is under close police protection.

'Shocked'

Police said the man had entered Mr Westergaard's house armed with a knife and had shouted in broken English that he wanted to kill him.

He said he had grabbed his five-year-old granddaughter and run to a specially designed panic room where he raised the alarm.

Mr Westergaard told Jyllands Posten he was shocked that his granddaughter had witnessed the attack.

He has now been taken to a safe location, but said defiantly that he would be back, the newspaper reported.

Jakob Scharf, who heads the Danish intelligence service Pet, said the attack was "terror related" and that the suspected assailant has close contacts to Somalia's al-Shabab group.

He had been under surveillance for activities unrelated to Mr Westergaard, Mr Scharf said.

Police said he was shot in the knee and the shoulder after threatening officers who tried to arrest him. Preben Nielsen of Aarhus police, said the man was seriously hurt but his life was not in danger.

The BBC's Malcolm Brabant, who interviewed Mr Westergaard when he emerged from hiding, says the incident will raise questions about security measures put in place by the Danish secret service to protect the artist.

Islamic militants have placed a $1m price on Mr Westergaard's head.

Although he is one of 12 cartoonists whose drawings of the Prophet were published in Jyllands-Posten, he has the highest profile, our correspondent says.

The price of freedom. $1 Million dollar bounty on his head.

Glad the cops shot the guy. Shame they weren't better shots.

Better to teach them to aim center of mass under stress and get some hits, than to try for head shots and get all misses, while he wails on you with an axe.

The whole thing is so rediculous, but relevant to the ideology of the radical Muslims who would seek to cut off, maim, and kill any and all who "defame" their leader...even in satire.

Yet, I have a couple of "causes" that are supported by my family, and can say without question that a bitch-slapping, (not a murder) would ensue towards anyone met in public that dared to speak ill of the United States Military, and in particular, Our Army Special Forces Soldiers. Sorry, but right is right...

Man Accused in Attack on Cartoonist Tied to Plot Against Clinton (Sec State)

Today From Fox News.........
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,581801,00.html
The Somali man accused of attempting to kill Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard was held over a foiled terrorist plot in Kenya, a Danish newspaper reported.
The 28-year-old was arrested over a planned attack on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Africa last summer.
The newspaper Politiken reported that he and four other suspects were held over a plot against a bus station and two hotels in Nairobi.
He was released in September due to a lack of evidence and returned to Denmark.
The man was carried into a court in Aarhus on a stretcher yesterday to face two charges of attempted manslaughter following the break-in at Westergaard's home.
He denied the charges and was remanded in custody.
The suspect was shot twice by police outside Westergaard's home while armed with an axe and a knife.
Westergaard's 2005 cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad ignited riots and outrage across the Muslim world.
Exactly right TR, unfortunately not all LEO's take their firearm proficiency as seriously as others, and as such many of the LEOs I interacted with on a daily basis couldn't hit a stopped vehicle from 10 feet.
It always amazed me, we qualified every 3 months and could shoot at least once a month on top of that. On the open range days you could do good training, moving and shooting, high stress shooting, speed target identification. I was always amazed there weren't more folks taking advantage of it, free bullets, good training, and you got paid for it, sign me up!
