PVS 24

Hey guys. We (swat snipers) are going to be upgrading our night vision capabilities for our sniper rifles. We currently plan on going with an in-line system to mount in front of our day scopes. Initially we planned on going with the PVS 22, but just had a demonstration by a rep from Northrop Grumman on the PVS 24. They tout that they were awarded a contract through SOCOM in 2006. I would like advice/opinions from anyone who has experience with the PVS 24. The rep did not indicate how the PVS 24's were being utilized by SOCOM, whether they were intended for use with sniper weapons systems, or with M-4's.

My basic questions are: Is the PVS 24 a viable night vision device for use with a sniper weapon system? Which performs better in clarity, the PVS 22 or the PVS 24? If you had to choose, PVS 22 or the PVS 24?

I have used both the PVS22 and the PVS24 with good results on both. The PVS22 is actually designed to be used with sniper rifles, it fits perfectly in line with the M3A scope when mounted with the rail system for the M24. The PVS 24 actually sits about a half inch too high for the M3A but that may be b/c of my particular scope rings. I also think that the PVS24 was designed for use with the M4 but that could be debatable. The PVS24 tends to shut of for a second or 2 right after a shot b/c of the ball of fire that blurts out of an M24(probably to preserve the night vision device) but if you are using a flash suppressor then I don't think this would be an issue. I have also used an upgraded version of the PVS22 called the PVS26 and I have had the best results with this optic. I use the PVS26 as my main night device for my sniper weapons. It is very clear and does not blur out after a shot. I would honestly say the PVS22 would be the best bet for your application but that is just my .02, you wouldn't have to deal with new scope rings, which will probably throw off the scope adjustment knobs which you are probably used to using already. The PVS22 is just a slap it on and go nv optic that was designed to be used with a sniper weapon.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like we will be going with the PVS22, for a couple of reasons. I had the opportunity to use the PVS22 in the sandbox with the M-4 and M-107. I really liked that piece of equipment. The one thing I like about the PVS24 is the rubber shroud it comes with to cover the gap between the day optic and the PVS24. With the PVS22 we used a piece of cardboard and 100 mph tape to make our own shroud to reduce the light signature. Anyone using anything different for this same purpose or know of an aftermarket piece for the PVS22?
