Thanks for the info Martin. I have no experience with personally owned fingerprint ID'ing devices. THat helped as I had not thought of some of those potential problems.

FWIW, I was cruising Academy Sports this afternoon and came across this for $59. It works great, runs on 8 AA batteries, has a key override if needed, has a motion detector alarm built-in to sound off if someone is fumbling around with it, and uses a five digit code. I played with it
and the actual namebrand
GunVault at the store. I actually found that this one was much easier to manipulate the buttons than the GunVault. The door is spring loaded and it has access holes to mount permanently (well semi-permanent) either in a closet, car, or on a wall.
It is not bad at all for the price at all either. I bought one and I really like it.
