We cultivated a big grouper in our canal. We would feed him the carcass of our catches. It always amazed on-lookers how he could devour a 20-30 lb dolphin carcass as if it was a tic-tac.. I think because we fed him he left us alone when we swam.

But,, out on the reef the groupers can be as aggressive as a shark. They are territorial and will BOOM when you are annoying them. They don't like sharing their personal lobster holes and will rush in and bump you if they think you are taking to many. You never tie your catch bag to yourself,, they will snatch it..

They are now protected in US waters.
