SEATTLE -- Seattle police are investigating the theft of Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske's service pistol, which was stolen from his police vehicle last week, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.
The chief's unmarked Crown Victoria was parked at Sixth Avenue and Olive Way in downtown Seattle on Dec. 26 when someone broke in and took his city-issued Glock 26.
The loaded gun was in a holster, hidden from view when it was taken, sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. that day.
Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said thefts of items from cars happened 23,000 times in the city last year.
Whitcomb said there is no policy against an officer keeping a gun in the car and the crime can happen to anyone.
"Your car is vulnerable. There are a lot of car prowls that do happen in the city of Seattle, and not even the chief of police is immune to them," Whitecomb said.
Whitcomb said the value of the gun makes the case a felony.
