We had a Timber Wolf/Shepherd mix when I was a kid. Excellent dog, would never bark when people came around. Instead you would hear this ungodly growl. We just had to stay in top of him as sometimes he would suck water out of the bowl instead of lapping it. Dad said the wolf was coming out and you can't let that happen. One of the best dogs I'be ever had.
