Just my 2 cents--and that is all it is worth.
1. He also expressed dismay over Iran's free usage of Iraqi airspace to shuttle arms into the country, saying "when we pulled out of Iraq, we certainly didn't expect" anything like that"- Well most of us on the ground in 2010-2011 saw it. We had cleared the deck of the sunnis. The Iraq Shite goverment was openly hostile to the US . The US failure to secure a SOFA. Those who did not see Iraq falling under the influence of Iran were/are blind.
2. Mattis would not directly answer whether or not Egypt was a coup, but said that what happened in Egypt is "a setback for democracy." - Really, the Egyptian goverment , granted elected by a majority, imbarked upon a regime as oppresive as Mubarak. The vast majority of the citizens rejected it, took the the streets and the military threw out some pretty crappy guys. Al indications point to new elections in the future. Sounds like a win for liberty to me.
