DET (A) Memorial Stone

After our Detachment (A) function at Myrtle Beach, I (Bob Charest) got an email from DET (A) member Gene Piasecki who works at Fort Bragg. He informed me that Jimmy Spoo, another member of DET (A) submitted a request to fund a DET (A) memorial stone at USASOC Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg. He needed help so Gene sent all the forms needed – a lot of them.

We alerted MG Sidney Shachnow (Ret) who enlisted the help of Mike Linanne and myself, as Jimmy was currently deployed. We visited USASOC Memorial Plaza to check out the stones currently installed, i.e., Mike Force, various SF groups, et al. for design ideas and understand the specs required. These are very impressive stones.

We took Jimmy’s verbiage for the stone, and together designed a DET (A) Memorial Stone.

Mike Linanne has been instrumental in putting together the paperwork – lots of it - and procuring a stone contractor. General Shachnow is overseeing this project to ensure its successful conclusion.

We thought this should be a collective effort for funding of the DET(A) Memorial Stone. This is a request to all DET(A) members for help with this historic project. The price of the stone, which includes installation, is $4,375.00.

SFA has been very helpful with this effort. I spoke with SFA President Jack Tobin and he offered SFA’s resources to assist in fund collection. SFA Treasurer Jim Blanchard has set up a special account for collections and accounting for us.

Donations should be sent to:

Special Forces Association
ATTN: Treasurer Jim Blanchard, SFA DET(A) Memorial Stone Fund
PO Box 41436
Fayetteville, NC 28309

Many thanks to Jimmy Spoo for his idea for the preservation of DET(A) history, and making this happen.

More information will be sent as it becomes available, and I will update you on the progress and status.
