I was just by Clinchco, VA not too long ago - there is a sign as you cross into "town" (defined as a group of houses along the highway, not the bustling town of Powers' youth) proclaiming it as the hometown of Shifty Powers. State Route 83 is an interesting drive, probably even better on a motorcycle. Pretty cool to see that sign in the middle of nowhere. I recognized the name, but those with me had no clue who Shifty was. He's a testament to the type of man that used to come out of that part of the world - Appalachian coal country is a rough place to grow up and make a living.
