FWIW- The Vietnamese are very successful here in Orange County. They are well educated, prosperous, and have some great Pho restaurants... I have several Vietnamese employees and they are among my best...

I suspect you are right.
Anecdotally, I know a bunch of Afghans settled already in NZ, and some of our 'Terps and their immediate families on the way down here over the next 3-6 months, including 1 that I'm sponsoring who didn't make the government sponsored cut.
They all seem to be the cream of the crop for the most part in terms of education, motivation, and mindset.......the ones already here have hit the ground running and integrated in NZ(not expecting the other way around).
I've read a few inspiring success stories about Vietnamese and Iranian immigrants to the US over the years.
It may not be a HUGE upside.......but there's always a Yin to the Yang.
