Smith's quality control over the years has been very spotty. Once saw a nickel plated gun with a big piece of wire from a wire brush plated over on the barrel. Believe it was a model 29.

I will never own a smith and this is the reason I am hesitant to buy a U.S. version Walther. Smith once sold their big N rames in velvet lined boxes, guess it was recognition they were more suited to looking at than shooting...
