These news are alarming to me. The fact that several Latin American countries are proving incapable of maintaining security within their borders goes to show how big the problem has become.

This has been mentioned in the boards before I believe, but I hold the belief that legalizing the product is just masking the underlying problem. In Mexico, Cartels didn't seem to just stop at drugs: arms smuggling, human trafficking and kidnappings became sort of accessory business models. Central America doesn't have to be different.
I don't presume to know the mind of a drug dealer, but those men seem to be hungry for money and power, like many wealthy businessmen elsewhere. Remove one of their products, and they can adapt to make money off some other illicit activity.
