I witnessed a hit and run last year. A truck wiped out a good looking yellow lab. I stopped long enough to check on the dog, realized he was hurt bad, broken back and hip. I gently picked him up and drove him the the nearest vet hospital. We attempted to contact the owners, listed phone number on the tags reported, "no longer in service".

Vet looked at me, I looked at him, we went 50/50 on splitting the x-ray costs. Photos confirmed the broken back. We then moved onto putting him down.

Calls were made to all docs in the area. When we finally found the owners, two days later. They were appreciative of me taking him to a doctor. I told them the bad news. When asked if he went alone or with someone holding him, I proudly reported he went lying in my arms and left this world peacfully. It made them feel better knowing.

If given the choice, I'd go out the same way, but I'd like to miss the truck.
