I carry a high quality neck knife ($185, Wilson Combat or Spartan) clipped to my belt, parallel to it, and in Kydex for quick, no fumble either hand removal. Never falls out if setup right. Used for rope cutting, field butchering, gutting, digging, prying, etc. daily. It's light, out of the way, and scary sharp.
As someone else pointed out, if I have to pull it because a cat, bear, or somethin' else is on me, I messed up bad. If I can't bring it to bear in an eye blink then I also deserve the good beating that's on its way.

I don't understand your point.
