Having read some accounts of the eastern front, particularly Waffen SS memoirs, their " My Loyalty was my Honor" defense didn't fly at Nuremburg. As Richard points out, many a good thing taken to excess ends up hairy. In contrast, despite violating his oath of allegiance to the United States, folks can empathize with General Lee's decision, his greater duty was to his family and home. How would the rebellion and our history have fared had Lee accepted command of Union forces as offered?
