That tanker was probably improperly loaded or the load somehow shifted after it was traveling. Sulfuric acid is some pretty caustic stuff. We use to use it to flush out oil wells in Long Beach, CA when I was working on the rigs.
Too bad it had to happen in such a beautiful area of the Rhineland.
