The main perks of the Five Seven to me is cartridge commonality with the P90, and AP ability. Neither one of those will probably apply to you. It has a very large grip, which may be uncomfortable for members of your family. You will have to train every person who might have to use it, and 5.7 ammo is pretty expensive. I have only shot the Five Seven, and for a home defense scenario it serves a limited role. It is very loud and over penetration is a major problem. As for the 45, I have no experience with. I don't know who all would be using it, but I for my family I've got a S&W J Frame in 38 Special. That's what has worked for me. One tip... take the entire family to the store, even if you can't test fire it.
