Richard, great article. I have to agree on the statement that we need to stop worrying about how we communicate, but concern ourselves with what our actions communicate.
Many of you know I have been working with a middle eastern nation on the purchase of some of our aircraft. If I heard it once from them I heard it a million times, "You promised us such and such and have not delivered, why should I believe what you are telling me now to be true"? This statement delivered to the senior ranking individual from Air Staff.
Then I get statements from their top general in the program, "Thank you so much for being a woman of your word. If the rest of your team acted as you do we would have no problems right now." When I told them I was going to do something I did it, no excuses.
I don't think the folks at Air Staff are doing anything maliciously, or intentionally. I think that in an effort to keep the realtionship on positive footing, they at times try and make the problems go away instead of facing them outright. Which comes back to bite us all in the butt later. If there is a problem, state there is a problem, and then lets work on a plan to fix it, instead of pretending everthing is honkey dorey.
Actions speak louder than words.
