If you can find one, a Yugo is typically the best, but if not, Romanian, Polish are the next in like. If you want an AK TYPE weapon, but not exactly an AK, get a Vz.58 Czech model, they are VERY reliable and more accurate then some of the others, in stock form. Do not misunderstand me, the AK can be an incredible rifle and have great accuracy, but in some models you do need to fiddle with them a bit, so you will want to talk to some of the guys on here to get a better feel for what should be done to make the most out of it.
If you get really desperate, I have an RPK barrel that I could sell to you, so you can start with a regular AK parts kit and build up from there. I am not sure of the bore on it, so will have to check, but got it from a good friend a while back for prototyping a training weapon, so just needed the outer diameter measurements from it and stuck it in the gun safe.
Any time you go to change a barrel in a weapon like this, have it done by a shop with a lot of experience doing it, because there are way too many people out there who don't know exactly what needs to be done for putting them in.
RPD, excellent weapon, great firepower, but with some cons that make it a bad choice for a civilian use support weapon. You will need to save all the belts, and buying extras to begin with will be difficult and expensive. Drums are hard to find, so it will take a long time to build a decent load for any kind of sustained fire role. I would use an RPK in a hear beat, and would probably go for the Yugo Paratrooper model, since a under folding stock makes storage, transport, carry and deployment a little easier. With a shorter overall length, it also makes it a bit more "weildy", so it can be collapsed for potential CQC use.
You can get 20, 30, 40, 70 round mags and drums for them readily, and for a lot less then most other weapons, so feeding the beast is a bit easier and readily available.
When it comes to supporting a weapon of this type with ammo, I would recommend some of the ChiCom shoulder bags that hold 5 mags each (other countries make them too, that is simply for example since I have a few myself). You can use these to provide a carrying capacity for an AG, or just to have a couple in a vehicle for a "BoB", in case you are doing counter ambush work that needs higher volumes of fire.
One thing to remember about using any mags larger then the 30 rounders, most pouches are not made to hold these, so you will need to find the bags/pouches specific to them or have them made, so I would personally look at just using 30 rounders and 70 round drums, and the drums can fit into a M249 SAW drum pouch or you can buy the actual sling bags for them.
