While I agree with you guys in principle (certainly with Reaper's point about them appearing weak...the Afghan interpreter quoted in the article says exactly that), I wonder if you guys aren't being a little too hard on the Dutch colonel.

When he's speaking to the media he's speaking to his own domestic politics. Maybe I'm being too generous but the tone I get from his quotes are more frustration than cluelessness.
