Or defend somebody else: see I know how you think - you might be able to deal with or escape from an attack by multiple assailants, but what about your family? Gangs, psychopaths, etc. roam pulic places in broad daylight too. Can't hide at home, even if you were inclined to do that. So why not use every tool/advantage at your disposal? Remember the Saturday Night Special Laws? They served primarilly to deprive the least affluent members of society (those most likely to be victims of violent crime) of affordable firearms.
