Ad Blocker

Is anyone here using uBlock as a pop up ad blocker? Or can you recommend an effective blocker?

MR2 05-12-2024 08:10

uBlock is my current go to for PCs. Running it on FireFox.

Issues:
#1 - not available on Android!!!
#2 - blocks popup on poorly designed websites (especially Gvt run ones). These popups are usually stupid "are you sure" or the second Captcha which prevents you from completing your task. Easy to disable for that page.

I could not watch youtube w/o it.

I highly recommend running a good VPN like ProtonVPN.
Issue: Rarely, some websites think you are accessing from a country that they block and you cannot access their site. Too often, they don't say why the site is "unavailable".

My current version of FF has a pretty good blocker in it. However, on previous versions I've used uBlock with very good success.

Ublock and FireFox now both up and running and seem to be very effective, thank you both for your input, ads were beginning to drive me crazy.

Good to hear. Using uBlock and FF, if you are still plagued by going to websites and getting the prompt pop-up to "Sign in with Google..." let me know. Kicking that to the curb used to be a FF switch but for whatever reason it's gone now. However, there is a filter setting you can put into the uBlock settings that seems to have mitigated that for me. Sing out if you need that.

Try this:

Click Firefox's hamburger icon (3 lines) on the right side of the Menu bar. Click Add-ons and Themes.

Click the 3 dots on the right side of the UBlock Origin listing, then click Preferences. It may read Options instead depending upon version of FF.

Click to highlight My filters on uBlock's Menu bar.

Click on line 1, in the big open space, and paste:

||accounts.google.com/gsi/*$xhr,script,3p

Click the Apply Changes button.

Done. Give me a shout if that doesn't work.

Though you are probably using the correct one, there is a difference between uBlock and uBlock Origin. The latter is the one you want to use.

Using Brave Browser as a default in conjunction with uBlock Origin will block 99% of all ads and threats in my experience.

You are correct; I'm using uBlock Origin. I should've made the distinction.

Interesting find yesterday. For another purpose I toggled it off. Then a search I did came up with the entire page full of responding links from MSN. Turn it back on and the search results are more diverse. n = 1 but I thought that was interesting, and it was repeatable.
