Lets get rid of the bed fed SAW and go with a fixed barrel, magazine fed, closed bolt weapon for suppressive fire. Might as just reissue the BAR for those long range shots.

Wait, this is like a 1:1 switch? I always thought the idea was that a few M4s would be switched out for this with the goal that the guys with this gun are OK'd to mag dump in the general direction of enemy. A 1:1 switch for an LMG :eek:

I thought the introduction of the IAW M27 by the USMC line companies replaced only half the M249 SAWs.
Will this remove all M249 SAWs replacing them with IAW M27s? |
From the RFI

The BAR...????
The BAR is an old weapons platform, It is heavy, the ammunition, .3006 is deadly a 168 grain bullet at @2850 ft/sec. & with a 20 round mag. chances are the intended target will absorb multiple hits. Personal experience as a SF medic in Vietnam showed me that enemy personnel that were engaged in a firefight were usually shot @ 4 or 5 rounds from a full auto burst from a BAR, The survival rate was 0% usually they were DOA by the time I reached the person shot, If they were still alive, Technically, a pulse, shallow breathing their time until they expired was 1 to 5 minutes. The weapon and the 20 round box mags. were heavy; But that was what you would want in a firefight. 3 to5 Strike Force "Chinese nungs were a game changer. TK

On the BAR it still soldiers on in the MAG58/M240 series. It uses the same locking system turned 180, FN BAR Type D quick change barrel and MG42 trigger/feed system.:lifter
