Saudi Arabia executes prominent Shiite cleric among dozens of others

A prominent Shiite cleric was among the 47 prisoners executed in Saudi Arabia Saturday after they were convicted of terrorism charges.

Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was a central figure in the 2011 Arab Spring-inspired protests in Saudi Arabia. The execution has sparked condemnation from several Muslim leaders in the Middle East and could kick off new unrest among the kingdom’s Shiite minority.

Iran had already warned that the execution of al-Nimir would deepen the rift between Tehran and Riyadh. Iran said last year that al-Namir’s execution would “cost Saudi Arabia dearly,” according to Reuters.

Iranian cleric Ahmad Khatami called on the Muslim world to denounce the execution of al-Namir. He also said the Saudi ruling family would be “wiped from the pages of history.”

“I have no doubt that this pure blood stain will stain the collar of the House of Saud and wipe them from the page of history,” Khatami was quoted by the Mehr news agency.

Later images showed police in full riot gear guarding the premises as firefighters doused the building. ISNA said Tehran's police chief was on the scene to restore calm.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari called for calm and said there should be no more demonstrations around Saudi diplomatic premises, the state news agency IRNA reported.

Earlier, photos on social media showed protesters scaling the fence of the Saudi consultae in Mashad and taking down the Saudi flag.

Nimr was executed on terrorism charges that Iran said were unjustified. Saudi Arabia executed the cleric alongside dozens of Al-Qaida members on Saturday, signaling intolerance of jihadism and minority Shi'ite Muslim violence while stirring a rise in sectarian tensions across the region.

Saudi Arabia says it has summoned Iran's envoy to the kingdom to protest critical comments by Iranian authorities over the execution.

In a statement late Saturday by the Saudi Press Agency, the Saudi Foreign Ministry described the Iranian criticism of its judicial system as "blatant interference" in its internal affairs.

Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry had summoned the Saudi envoy in Tehran to protest the execution of the Shiite cleric. Iran's parliament speaker warned that the execution would prompt "a maelstrom" in Saudi Arabia.

Scores of Shi'ites in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province marched through Nimr's home district of Qatif shouting "down with the Al Saud", and several hundred gathered in nearby Bahrain, a Sunni-ruled island kingdom allied to Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. State Department said is concerned that the Saudi execution risks exacerbating sectarian tensions.

In a statement, John Kirby, a State Department spokesman, also urged the government of Saudi Arabia to respect and protect human rights, permit peaceful expression of dissent and reiterated the need for all leaders in the region to "redouble efforts" to de-escalate regional tensions.

Lebanon's Supreme Islamic Shi'ite Council called Nimr's execution a "grave mistake", and the Hezbollah group termed it an assassination as Shi'ites took to the streets in protest from Tehran to Kashmir.

In Iraq, former prime minister Nuri al-Maliki predicted that Nimr's execution would lead to the downfall of the Saudi government.

Shi'ite leaders in Kuwait, Lebanon, and Yemen also warned of reprisals, in a signal that sectarian conflicts across the Middle East could be further inflamed.

Most of the 47 executed were convicted of Al-Qaida attacks in Saudi Arabia a decade ago, but four, including prominent cleric Nimr, were Shi'ite Muslims accused of shooting policemen during anti-government protests in recent years.

The executions took place in 12 cities in Saudi Arabia, with four prisons using firing squads and the others beheading the condemned. The bodies were then hanged from gibbets in the most severe form of punishment available under the kingdom's Sharia Islamic law.

BEIRUT — The Middle East slid dangerously closer to regional conflict Monday after Saudi Arabia rallied its Sunni allies to sever diplomatic ties with Iran, prompting alarmed appeals for restraint from powers across the globe.

Bahrain and Sudan joined Saudi Arabia in cutting off relations with Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, a key Iranian trading partner, recalled its ambassador from Tehran, as the fallout from the execution of a prominent Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia on Saturday heightened sectarian tensions across the Middle East.

The Obama administration, caught in the middle by its quest for a closer relationship with Iran and its long-standing alliance with Saudi Arabia, said it hoped Tehran and Riyadh would dial back the hostile rhetoric that has fueled the worst crisis between the regional rivals in decades.

“We’re urging all sides to show some restraint and to not further inflame tensions that are on quite vivid display in the region,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters in Washington.

Ok, so an analogy here:

I've got an old, yellow dog... And most are aware of what this means. There isn't much that rattles her, and she doesn't care about a whole lot outside of dinner, walks, getting scratched and rubbed and a few select toys.
We go walk every day... She's on a leash... Not because she needs one but so we avoid any grief from other folks or the "law"

We roll past this one fenced yard every day, and every day one of these idiot dogs flings itself against the fence and commences to come unglued.
Shortly after the initial assault on the fence, Idiot Dog's cellmate joins the fracas on the far side of the fence and starts barking,snarling...etc etc.
Moments later the two idiot dogs forget about the old yellow dog and commence to beat the living tar out of one another. The old yellow dog has zero reaction... That thing doesn't have food and doesn't meet any of the previously mentioned criteria.
And we move along quietly

So if the idiots are OK beating each other up.... I'm good with that. In fact, I encourage it.

There was an "Arabia" before there was a "Saudi Arabia."

The House of Saud was smart enough to back the winning side during WWII,
and then were smart enough -- or lucky enough -- to partner with the Arab
American Oil Company (ARAMCO) to develop the oil fields.

If some other clan/house/family had stood up at the right time, hell, it might
even be "Laden Arabia" as in "House of Ben Laden."

So if the House of Saud were to fall, with or without an Iranian push, who would be in line for the throne?
