EGLIN AFB – Interested in putting their football players through a team-building exercise, Choctaw High School turned to the ultimate team on Sunday. In an event that came about after an idea was passed along by the parents of football players, Choctaw’s 4-2 football team was the guest of the Army’s 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) on Sunday morning. Taking a tour of the facility and hearing personal testimonies from the soldiers, athletes at Choctaw were able to learn first-hand the physical and mental strength it takes to belong to the Army’s special forces, knowledge that could be invaluable to a football team in the midst of a long season. “I think it was very successful,” said Choctaw principal Cindy Gates, who accompanied the team on its visit. “Those guys all had incredi-ble stories that they shared with our kids. I think our kids were able to see that in an environment like this, when one team member fails, the whole team fails. That is a very valuable lesson.” The Indians, who have won four games this season after a 3-7 campaign in 2010, will host East Gadsden at 6 p.m. on Friday. For head coach Greg Thomas, Sunday’s visit was a way for players to gain a new perspective. |
