Anyone else shooting .17 HMR?
I picked up a Savage Model 93 bolt action in .17 HMR last week. Came with synthetic stock, Accu trigger, fluted bull barrel and a cheap 3-9 X 40 scope for $249 at Dicks Sporting Goods. I replaced the scope with a Simmons and added bipod legs. Also picked up 2 x 10 rd mags.
The .17 HMR is a fast and very accurate rimfire bullet. I put down some really nice groups when zero'ing it. Trigger pull is very smooth with the Accu trigger. Heck of a gun for the money. My only gripe is that I am not crazy about the magazine release design but that wouldn't stop me from buying the gun again. If you are in the market for a well priced varmint/small game rifle, give this one a look.. |
I have one and love it (Marlin 917 with bull barrel). As I don't hunt, it's utility is significantly lower than 22LR, but I love having a rimfire rifle that can push out past 300 without dropping the scratch for ammo for a centerfire. It's definitely a "want", not a "need", but it's a very nice "want" :)
I'm currently using a BSA Sweet 17 for optics. |

Had a friend that used one (savage 93) for small varmint control on a research farm. Mostly took rodents, but the occasional coyote as well. The only issue I ever recall him having with was a few small parts wearing, I believe the extractor wore out. Savage shipped him new parts with no issues. Shot well and held up well for being left in a farm truck and beat up pretty well. Several thousand rounds went through that thing over the course of 2-3 yrs. I believe he still has it, but we haven't shot it in a while.

Any more feed back on this caliber? Below is one of the weapons shown to me and am considering. Guess I'll be looking at availability and cost of ammo as the weapon felt very good, especially the charging mechanism and what I read of the caliber surprised me...
http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index...uktShow=detail I'm supposing it is a tad bit less expensive than the full blown model below and looks to be a more useful round... http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index...u=99&sprache=0 |

Henry 17
I use a Henry lever action 17 for prairie dogs and coyotes. The lever action on the Henry is smooth as butter. I use open sights. Also works great on rats!
