Six Guns
 

Okay, here is a new one, not necessarily about revolvers. :D

In this scenario, you are limited to ownership of six firearms, maximum, for the rest of your life, selected from production weapons available today. No Class Three, for purposes of this discussion.

Let's not get bogged down into the discussion of how we got to that point, or how to cheat and have access to more.

List the six firearms you would choose if you knew they were the only six you were ever going to own for defense, hunting, target shooting, etc. They can be weapons you presently own, or would like to own.

I'll go first.

1. Carbine: Bravo Company lightweight 16" M4, flattop, 5.56, TA31 RCO or 1.5-5x Leupold. Spare uppers in multiple calibers and barrel configurations, if possible, along with a .22LR conversion unit.

2. Battle Rifle: M1A in an E2 stock, alternate FN-FAL or SR-25, TA11 or 1.5-5x scope, 7.62x51 NATO.

3. LR/Hunting Rifle: Remington 700 PSS, Nightforce 5-22x scope. Alternate, custom build on a pre-64 Winchester M70, .300 Win Mag.

4. Pistol: HK P2000, .40 S&W. Alternate, ParaOrdnance P14 Limted, .45 ACP.

5. Rimfire pistol: S&W 41 or Ruger Mark I or II, .22LR.

6. Shotgun: Remington 870 shotgun, extended mag 20" barrel, RemChokes, 12 gauge. Spare barrels in multiple lengths, if possible. Alternate, Benelli M1 Super 90, 12 gauge.

Anyone else who has a half dozen they could live with/not live without?

I was thinking the same...specifically considering the choice of 40 cal rather than 9mm for the handgun...but the GOV is procurring 40 cal at aggressive rates....hmmm....Reaper

1. Carbine - Colt 6920 with RIS II, Eotech xps, Surefire light, VFG

2. Battle Rifle - SCAR-17s with Nightforce 2.5x10 with offset Insight MRDS or 1x4 NXS to save weight.

3. LR rifle - Accuracy International AX338 with 5x22x56 NXS

4. Pistol - Glock 19 with .22 conversion kit

5. .22 Rifle - Ruger 10/22 with Aimpoint T1 or MRDS

6. Shotgun - Remington MCS complete kit with Eotech xps


Alternates

1. BCM-16 same set up
2. HK MR762/Colt 901 same setup (rationale being same controls as AR-15)
3. McMillan Tac-308 Same scope (this would be friendlier to my AO as there is no big game around that can't be taken with .308

4. SW M&P Pro 9mm or HK USP combat competition 9mm with Light LEM trigger
5. CZ 452 with low power scope
6. Benelli M4 with full mag tube, not the neutered tube that comes stock on civy M4

Basically agree with "THE REAPER" but may substitute a S&W Revolver Model 19 .357 Combat Magnum for one of the semi-auto pistols....Tom Kelly

Ok my choice as an old guy "stuck in the past". :)

1. Carbine: LaRue Tac 14.5" PredatOBR 5.56mm w/ Flip[ up BUIS, Aimpoint ML2 with QD and Aimpoint Magnifier.

2. Battle Rifle/Mid range hunting rifle, LaRue OBR 18" barrel with S&B 4x16 scope w/H59 reticle, BUIS, and Aimpoint Micro T1 w/side mount.

3. LR/hunting Reminton 700 300 Win Mag with RACS stock (yes already have one), S&B 5 x 25 scope with H59 reticle BUIS and Micro T1 w/side mount.

4. Pistol/Main FNH FNP High Cap 45. with iron sights ( all the fancy stuff breaks)

5. Back up pistol S&W .38 special snubby

6. Shotgun Mossberg Flex with all available modules.

Old man with old man ideas. :D

PS, watch the Tremor reticle it is a ballistic reticle that will have problems with other rounds, mett conditions, and especially if you dial in 10 mils to take advantage of the mil reticle. MOO but i would not own one stay with the H59. You can use it as a standard mil reticle or as a hold reticle. Best of both worlds.

I seldom get involved in these as opinions are like a**holes and everyone has one but thought I would throw in my 2 cents. :)

I like using the same ammo as the LEO/Military because it is always likely to be available, but you can pick anything you like, as long as you feel you can justify it and obtain it. You will not likely find a box of .41 Magnum ammo in your Wal-Mart or with a buddy willing to trade, but you will see .45 ACP and .40, and maybe even .44 Mag. If you have enough to last you, then that might be a good choice.

Terminally, .40 S&W is a significantly better choice than 9x19, at the expense of mag capacity. Having said that, current ammo prices make 9mm a good choice for practice, since you can get 9mm Ball for just over $200/M, .40 is $300/M, and .45 ACP is around $375/M. While the military is still using 9mm, most civilian agencies are using .40 or .357 SIG. You pick what you want to use and think you can get.

Guys, do not necessarily confine yourself to the firearms categories I used. I just labeled them generically so that I could keep track. If you want one rifle and five pistols, that is your call, though I might like to know your rationale.

Seeing a lot of the same or similar selections is helping me reconsider or validate my choices.

Dozer, I like military weapons because I know them well and they tend to be reliable and durable. I can use an M1A to take a whitetail deer just as well as a civilian bolt gun, but the bolt rifle is not nearly as effective for the zombie apocalypse or a service rifle match. If you wanted a battery of Krieghoffs, Purdeys, and Perazzis, that would be your call. Seriously, what guns would you like to have, if anything?

Tom, I really thought hard about giving up my 686 for a .22LR, but practicality won out. Using your 19 in lieu of an autoloader would be your call. More powerful, but slower to reload, that would be your choice and I respect that.

Rick, my list might be even closer to yours if I had trigger time on those rifles. I can see you like LaRue's guns, and I would love to have your optics budget.

My choices (which I had, prior to being robbed 2 years ago):
1. M1A w/E2 birch stock, 4-14 power mil dot scope w/ winter trigger.
2. Glock 23 w/9mm barrel & 22LR Advantage Arms conversion kit.
3. Remington 870 w/extended tube magazine.
4. Ruger Security Six stainless 4" bbl.
5. M4 w/ 7.62x39mm upper & 22LR conversion kit.
6. Serbu BFG-50 w/36" bbl & set trigger.

Have since replaced all but M1A & Serbu.
Money constraints & range limitations, don't think I ever will.
At least I have the 7.62x39mm for medium duty.

Not sure what part of "stuck in past" is the predatOBR....that would be more of M1 garand, M1903, and Govt model 1911 :D

1. Pistol: Glock 17, RMR cowitness with iron, with .22 conversion, alternate HKP30 or CZ Shadow
2. Carbine: AK 74, ultimak rail, TRS 25 cowitnessed with iron
3. Long range/battle rifle: Larue OBR 7.62, HDMR, TRS 25 offset mount, BUIS, alternate SAKO TRG 42 or m10 338 Lapua
4. Shotgun: Remington 870, 18",ghost ring, stand-off choke with additional 26" barrel, modified choke
5. .22 rifle: Larue or JP or Barnes Precision 1-6x24 or EOTECH cowitness with iron, with .22 conversion
6. CCW: SIG 232 or CZ PO1

TR, my choices were fairly easy as I have over half of them already and am looking at picking the rest up for the well known, "Zombie Apocalypse" whatever that is. :D

Your choice of categories is what is needed, only a couple of possible exceptions but not really noteworthy IMHO. And yes, I am rather taken with the OBR line. Very nice and solid so far.

Frostfire, sarcasm as I have been accused of being old fashioned and hidebound. Will stay with the .45, not really impressed with the 40, then again not much trigger time with them. Again, old fashioned. ;)

The Mossberg is based on reading and NOT experience so beware I am asking for something based on faith and good write ups, as such, the modular idea is great but I have no idea if it really works. :munchin

I did leave out the .22 conversion for 5.56.

My interest tend to be in modern military weapons. It's also the type that I shoot the most, own the most and am most familiar with.

There is nothing these weapons can't do that a fox side by side or or an '03 Springfield sporter could do better.

On top of that modern weapons tend to be more modular, somewhat easier to work on, and obviously can be used in any role whether it be hunting or defense or sports.


@TR my choice of 9mm over other pistol calibers is simply because I shoot it better than I shoot any of my .45's couple with high mag capacity and ammo availability make it a good choice for me. I have no experience with .40 but hope to change that in the future.
