The Truth About Being a Hero by Karl Marlantes

The link below leads to an interesting story from the Saturday Essay on the Wall Street Journal titled, "The Truth About Being a Hero" by Karl Marlantes. Mr. Marlantes received the Navy Cross for the action he describes in the article.

Ain't it the truth.
Two of the bravest things I ever saw never got the guys anything. I was a cherry at the time, to dumb to know I could write someone up for whatever, just figured 'Holy shit, so that's what you do".
In truth young soldiers didn't think in those terms anyways (awards) we figured that was a senior NCO/O deal to make a rec.

Didn't Get a Thing?

Without heroes we are all just ordinary people. When you do the right thing at the right time you don't need a medal or a story to affirm your actions. Regard's, Tom Kelly
