SF SCAR-L and SCAR-H issue?

What's the lastest on this? I was reading on another forum that the FORCE MOD in another group was saying that the SCAR-L was going to be going away and very limited issue of the SCAR-H (2-4 per ODA). Any truth to this? Thank you.

Not what we are hearing.

It appears that SCAR-L and -H are coming to stay.

One of my buddies is the senior charlie on his team, he and everyone else has one (in addition to an M4 of course).

He uses the heavy variant with an Elcan Spectre...and btw, he loves it.

Limited production initial fielding. It's coming, everybody will eventually get it. Details are still being finalized. CDRs will be briefed this week at the CRC.

Do not attempt to use the SCAR-H as a sniper rifle. It didn't hold up for our guys at Benning. It is a battle rifle in 7.62 and is something that is sorely needed.

I got to shoot the heavy, back to back with the Massoud. The Massoud was better!:D Of course I'm biased. It ran well but has a problem similar to the AR-10 series, a long recoil impulse which pulls the muzzle of the target and then it takes longer to get back on target. Also it was pretty front heavy, despite having a barrel smaller in diameter (even at the breech) than many 5.56 guns.

We had issues with the stock not wanting to lock into position, my buddy adjusted it for his length of pull, shot it, and the stock collapsed completely, jamming the metal optic body into his forehead. He is not a scar heavy fan now.

It short stroked when the gas setting was on the suppressed setting, but no can attached (this is not a negative, except perhaps in a version that is not specialized, like a sniper rifle)

Rick, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the heavy as a sniper rifle.

No, seriously, it is not and was not designed to be a sniper rifle. There is work on a Sniper variant but the Heavy was a Heavy battle rifle weapon system. It was never meant to be a Sniper Weapon System. Can you hit a man-sized target at 450 meters, hell yes, can you do consistently at 600 meters, probably not. 450 meters is Designated Marksman land. Hell even the "Knuckle Draggers" can do that with a M4.

Some notes:

1. The mounting system will not mount a PVS 22 - 29. Too short.

2. Will not hold a group when it heats up, nothing new here the M110 has a similar problem just not as radical.

3. Once it fouls it gets very erratic (sniper wise) in accuracy and distance from aim point.

4. Ergonomics, for some, is bad as cheek slides down the cheek rest.

A quick point of reference, when guys talk accuracy are you saying it shoots .5 moa groups (extreme spread of the group), or it shoots within .5 moa of aim point? They are two different measurements and some confuse that two to make a weapon sound better than it is and for its capabilities.

Justinmd 12-10-2009 20:46

I've seen pics of what they call the sniper version. It looks like the same rifle with a really long skinny barrel.

About that group size things, I've been hearing stories of how the Florida rifle company measures their groups, if one all the rounds are within .5moa from the "center" of the group, it's .5moa gun, no matter if two of the rounds are 1moa apart. Good marketing tactic for sure.

The sniper version has a longer heavy barrel and a longer forestock shroud to match the requirement to hang on NVDs dodads, with bells and whistles. The problem with grouping, accuracy, consistency, etc, (you know all the hallmarks of a SWS) are still missing.

I work in 1st SFG S7 Force Mod, the current word right now is that they are cutting funding all across the board. Dropping the SCAR completly has been considered. One COA is to scrap the SCAR-L and keep the SCAR-H. We have a guys on ODAs that like the SCAR H, primary because it fills a capability gap. As of right now, continue with evaulations with the weapons from the LRIP

As for the SCAR-H SSR, I fire it at the last Shot Show, I felt it fire very well and the accuracy was there. I have a buddy that was part of the test for SCAR SSR in Jan and he had a lot of good things to day about it. It is a much better gun than the SASS

Justinmd 03-02-2010 15:00

Where did you fire the SCAR SSR at the SHOT show? I was there, and at the media shoot, and another shoot during the show as well, no SCAR's anywhere.
