Saw a beret at a gun show here in Minnesota today. It had the SF logo on the outside and a patch sewn inside. The inside patch was ...

Question...do I purchase this and keep it from some posers hands or just let it be?

My brother Nick was in RT Habu, CCN. Doesn't seem right to see this beret at a gunshow for the public to purchase. I can still go back tomorrow to get it, should it still be there. The fellow selling it has mostly Nazi WWII stuff, and makes a living selling these momentos.

Buy it if you wish, but the fact that you've bought it won't keep a posser from getting another beret and making up his own stories...

Who's to say it's actually what it appears to be? I haven't looked at eBay in years, but there used to be a guy selling "SOG" berets on a regular basis. He claimed they smelled old! No returns, all sales final!

He went by the name Grossritter...I just Googled it.

last I checked a genuine in-country made SOG patch for an RT was in excess of $100 on the internet.

There are tons of reproductions out there. and way too many schmucks selling them as the "real deal" and charging real deal prices.

Most of them have a story attached to how they obtained the beret as well. If it sounds too good to be true, just walk away.

Guess I had suspicions of a fake patch. Just thought I'd ask the Professionals their opinion.I can't quite get my mind around as to why one would give up this piece of personal history. We all have our reasons, I guess.

Guys die and some relatives don't hold any particular attachment to the items. I remember a deceased SFer's Silver Star Medal (from Nam) with documentation being auctioned on eBay. I think the seller bought it at a yard sale.

If the logo inside was done by a machine on a rayon or silk liner then it is probable. We had a shop that took out the old liner then replaced it with a silk or rayon (crs) with the logo embroidered on the new liner. That was pretty much the standard at CCN when I was there (69-70). Too bad you don't have a picture of it.

Now that is really heart breaking...... :( A Silver Star being put up for auction..... :( Almost want to make you cry....... :( If I ever came across something like that, I would do my best to purchase it and than try like hell to find the SF guy on this forum using the documentation available to return it.......I seriously mean it......

Odd items end up in strange places

My F-I-L was a navigator in the AF SOF aircraft. When their unit rotated out of VN at the end of the war somehow the big brass bell that was outside/in the Officer's Club ended up in his possession.

Its been hanging ouside in my in-laws back yard ever since. It has the unit and club, IIRC, ingraved on it. He passed away a couple of years ago. I'll keep my eye on it. Never know, one of those FL SOW units might like it for old times sake.

Fakes are a dime a dozen. If it's real it's worth big bucks.

We all threw away fortunes in stuff leaving RVN.

I saw one of the cargo strap belts we used to make a while back.
It was advertised as a "SOG Recon Belt" $150.
