Springfield XD(M) .40SW
 

Greetings all,
First off for all those down range, Good Luck and God Speed, and come home safe.

Looking for sound advice on the Springfield XD(M) .40SW. Id prefer the .45 but its not manufactured yet.
I did some benchmark .9mm T&E on glock, taurus, sig, ruger, styer, 92F, S&W, and XD 9, 40 and 45, . Found the XD nice in .45 and the (M) in .40 was great.

Just want to know before I dump big money on one with all the kit.

Not looking to take it into the field. Range use and Burgler Be Gone Gun only.

Looking for fuctionality and any unknown problems.

Actually the XD (M) has not been discussed on this forum yet. It is a much different gun from the standard XD model previously introduced to the market.

I have an XD not "M" and like it a lot. It's a 40 ther ewasn't a 45 where i bought this one.
I think with Leatham's indorsement you can't go wrong. Blitz

Functionally it is the same exact gun. The M features a cosmetic redesign and a modification to the mag to hold additional capacity. Other than that it is identical to the existing models.

If you dry fire the XD a lot be sure to use a snap cap. The Slide has a roll pin that passes through the striker assembly. It is prone to breaking and will render the gun useless when it does. Dry firing will cause that roll pin to fail. I know because I was one of the first lucky ones to break that pin. Thankfully it was at a match not a much more important "social function".

I stand corrected. It is mentioned in other threads, but not fully discussed. The XD discussions should reflect very similar results though.

I understand that a few parts, as noted, are prone to breakage, and Springfield will not sell repair parts, requiring all pistols be returned for repair. The overnight (required) UPS charges would make that a $100 proposition each time.

Not saying that it isn't a good pistol, you just need to be aware of that issue.

I dry fire my XD9 a lot and have for the last year. I haven't had that problem. Maybe I need to visit the gun doctor and have it checked.

I bought replacement roll pins from pistolgear(dot)com and took care of it myself. It is only $1.35 for three pins. They are so cheap that I just ended up replacing them every time I replaced the recoil spring.

Good info. I already ordered 2. I understand that the tolerances betweeen the XD and the XD(M) the (M) is a bit tighter and a more accurate weapon.

Any knowledge of stress fractures or slide breaks, like on the Taurus 24/7 and Barretta 92F?
Or more importantly any feed problems?

Thinking about polishing the feed ramps, but get the 50/50 do/don't opinions.
We'll see after a few mags.

No talk among the guys who shoot the XD heavily in competition about slide failures. The two I have owned have been 100% good to go straight out of the box. That is only a sample size of two but I wouldn't be worried about polishing the feed ramp just yet.

I'm impressed with the XD(m). I've got two XDs, and have no problem recommending the (m). The major improvements are ergonomics (grip) and trigger pull (major improvement - I'm saving my allowance to send my XDs off to Springer for his trigger job; friend's XD(m) made me jealous). Can't understand why anyone would ever consider a "Block" :p when they could get an XD.

Sent my XD45 to Springer for the trigger job & Heinie Straight 8 sights. The trigger job made all the difference in the world. I would recommend anyone who buys an XD to have it done. I'm shaking my head at how bad the trigger pull was before I sent it off.

rubberneck - Thanks for tip on the roll pin & location of the replacement. I have one of pistolgear's stainless drop-in barrels. They are a top notch group.

Never been much into pistols, but theres a pistol range 5 to 10 minutes away, so I picked up a XM-9. It is nice, feels comfortable in the hand, very stable and shoots well. The dual safeties take some getting used too but I really like it.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this forum. After a two month wait, I received my XD(M) .40. As it is my first handgun, I have a lot of work to do. I need to learn to "hit the water when I fall out of the boat." Back to reading the Team Sergeant's shooting threads while doing grip exercises.:lifter
