Iran on friendly terms in the 1960's ?
While I was looking for video clips on youtube about green berets, ( I know the proper term is The Quiet Professionals, which in many ways is true. )
I was really surprised, even though I know part of special operations' job is training foreign armies to be able to defend themselves, long after the Quiet Professionals leave. I came across this video clip from the early 1960's and I thought that was very interesting because it does show we had better relations with Iran. The hand to hand combat demonstration is worth a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_Bm126tvj8 |
Interesting find. Wonder where the rest of it is...

Iran was once a US ally
The third man from the right (front row) was an Iranian officer in my Special Forces Officers Course in 1975.
He was probably killed with the fall of the Shah, but in the one in a million chance that he would be in a dangerous situation if the picture was published, I've smudged out his face. By the way, note the Iranian bell bottom trousers, the color of milk chocolate. Note also the Officer from Singapore, and one from Malaysia. The two from Zaire left the platform and immediately boarded a flight home This was in "the old days" when we kept our branch. You will see the 5th Group Surgeon, the Signal Company Commander, and one handsome (but baby faced) Infantry 1LT Detachment Executive Officer on the right front. The TAC officer, MAJ Budge Williams, is left rear. Does anybody know the NCO with the JFK Center flash at the right rear? http://www.members.aol.com/cbjpegs/SFOC.JPG |
The Pahlavi regime spent a good amount of money on U.S. Military equipment. They even signed a contract with us, Germany, and France to build nuclear reactors at Bushehr and Darkhovin in the mid 70s. Of course when Khomeini came along we, along with the other western supporters, withdrew support from Iran and many of the Iranian scientists left the country.
Khomeini was initially upset about nuclear technology and referred to it as 'westoxification' haha. Sorry little history nerd in me coming out there. |
