Fixed blade Knife
 

Ok, I know that everyone here is a fan of Mr. Harsey's work (A/F, Yarborough, Smatchet) and I have heard The Gerber Mark II mentioned several times. Knife selection being the Personal topic that it is; What are some favorite Fixed Blade knives of folks around here? Including general purpose blades and those intended for "social" useage.

For folders, least expensive to most expensive, I like the Spyderco Endura (best bang for the buck), Benchmade AFCK Axis Lock 810 in D2, the Harsey Combat Folder by Lone Wolf, and the CRK Sebenza.

For fixed blades, it depends on the mission. I like to carry a heavy blade for chopping and a smaller blade for utility work.

In the choppers, I like a machete, a Camp Axe/Cruiser Axe, or a Kukri, depending on the METT-T.

For utility fixed blades, I started with the Kabar, which is an excellent knife for the money, bought a Gerber Mk 2, moved up to a Cold Steel Trailmaster, an Al Mar fixed blade SERE, a cheapie mini-version of an Al Mar Kukri, and now have a Yarborough knife.

I also admit to liking a Glock e-tool for light digging and sawing, but give me the old hickory handled e-tool with the pick on the opposite side if the digging is going to be tough.

I would not mind adding a Smatchet one day, if it is as useful as I have heard, an Applegate-Fairbairn in S-30V, or a longer version of the Yarborough.

My dream fighter is a Brend #2 10" in D2 (shorter version below).

I think that's the one. Bob Kasper designed it. Its a handful.

I have owned a number of Emerson fixed blades and folders over the years. The chisel ground blade geometry is less than ideal for general field use but they are awesome knives nonetheless. Ernie's Kandahar is a nice V ground fixed blade.
I like the all around cutting ability of flat ground blades. Whether chopping or slicing it really performs. Trace Rinaldi, Shiva Ki and Kevin McKlung aka Mad Dog Knives all make some great flat ground fixed blades. Many others out there.
IMHO despite the vast array beautiful blade profiles out there these days I find that the more simple "ordinary" looking knives tend to be the most useful.
