Trijicon ACOG TA33-8A
 

I recently sold my TA01 NSN and purchased the new TA33-8A http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/p...2&categoryID=3

I haven't had a lot of range time with it yet, but I would like to get some feedback from those that have used ACOG's with the cheveron reticule (TA31F) and whether or not you felt that it is as precise as teh TA01 NSN crosshairs.

I was really comfortable with the NSN model, but wanted something with a better FOV and had BAC capability. The only thing is that the reticule is really small (at smaller than the other ACOG's that I've used - NSN, TA31F, TA55).

Opinions?

As a former sniper I like the crosshairs for a number of reasons.

I've got a model with the cheveron reticule and am now trying to sell it.....;)

I don't think the chevron is as precise as crosshairs. It also tends to obscure details - i.e. it covers large portions of the target. I won't be putting one on my SPR forgery. With that said - I like my TA31F. It's good enough that mounted on one of my carbines, I can reliably break clays at 200 yds. Body shots to 500 yds are relatively easy too. At close range the BAC is easy to use (with practice), at longer ranges I really like the target ID capability vs. the EOTech/Aimpoint. My .02 - Peregrino

Ooops... too late! I got rid of my 10x42mm and purchased the TA55 because I figured that I wouldn't shoot anything over 600M with the SPR anyway.

Seeing it by itself was one thing, but I just didn't realize how big that ACOG was until I installed it on my rifle. Awesome piece of glass though. I have to admit, I've been eyeing the Illuminated Leupold Mark 4 (6.5-20x50mm) pretty hard lately. If my eye continues to itch anymore, I might get rid of the TA55 for it. :cool:

The TA55 is too big of a glass for that rifle, and not enough magnification for me.

The Leupy 6.5-20x is too much mag.

What is wrong with the dedicated optic designed for that weapon, the TS-22 (Leupold 3-9x36 Mark 4 MR/T 30mm)?

If you have the $ and like extreme precision, the Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x is a very nice option. The 3.5-15x is also a nice piece of glass, but it a little large and more mag than most need for a 5.56mm.

I really like the eye relief of the TA55, but you are right that it is quite big for the rifle. After reading your post above, I went to check out the TS-22. I liked it, but I have been seeing a lot of people going to the NF Optics. My only experience with them was about 10 or so years ago when I saw them at a local funshow. Picked one up, looked in it, liked it until I saw the price tag. I gently put it down and ran. :D

Are they a tad better than the Leupolds in terms of quality of glass, ruggedness, or both?

I should be able to sell the TA55 for $1100 at minimum so I can direct those funds towards a TS-22, or a decent priced NF from MSTN http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.htm...f=134&t=144107

I have both the TS-22 and the Nightforce, while I love Leupold, and NF can be a pain to deal with, the NF is hands down a better optic. Cleaner, more accurate, crisper adjustments, and more reticle options.

As with many things, you get what you pay for.

Archangel, I'll throw the 1-4x in my bag so that you can play with it next month. It is a super piece of glass and I'm sure the one TR refers to would look nice on that rifle of yours. :cool:

I appreciate the offer, but I would rather link up with you and go burn some powder on our own time and not when we're stuck up for weeks in a place where you may, or may not have the ability to properly secure your gear. I was considering bringing my AAC can next month, but decided against it due to the reason above and the asspain of having to deal with the airlines.

I found a pretty good deal on a used Leupy 3-9x36 and a LaRue SPR mount for $1050 shipped. Now all I have to do is sell the TA55.

I prefer a cross hair and a dot. Not necessarily both. The eye can see uniformity easier and a cross or a dot or even a open round aperature are uniform so the eye can see the middle of them more comfortably and faster.

I have found the chevron reticles to be difficult for my eye to place in the middle of something and given the low magnificatgion and relatively thick chevron on the ACOG, these factors compound the problems the eye has in seeing what is centered on the chevron. The tip of the chevron on the ACOG us for 100 meters I believe so perhaps its preception problems are not significant. The vertical and horizontal stadia on the chevron reticles of ACOGs are extremely difficult for the eye to see precisely as they are very small.

IMHO a better bet to 600 would be a simple cross hair.

I also believe that you can train your eye to see perfectly with any type of reticle pattern. It will just take more time with the chevron than a cross hair.

You describe the natural ability of the eye to see the middle of a circle with far more ease than the eye seeing the tip of a very thick triangle.

I am a believer in aperatures. Unfortunately, no one makes an optic with an adjustable aperature reticle pattern unless you also change magnification.

After taking TR's comments to heart, I put my TA55 up for sale and three days later it's sold so I am going to put that money towards a Nightforce scope.

Notes: I am looking at the 3.5 x 15 NF. It may be a little more magnification than I need for that particular rifle, but I can always use it later on a .308 bolt gun. The best price that I have found for that scope is $1256 shipped. Does anyone know where I can find one for a good price (hopefully with a military discount)?

I got mine from Wes at MSTN. He offered the lowest price and also mounted it in my SPR mount for free.
